BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, Sept. 3 (PNA) -- Aklan Governor Carlito Marquez is contemplating on replicating the implementation of the sustainable waste management-material recovery facility (SWM-MRF) in this resort island in the entire province of Aklan.
According to Marquez, he came up with the idea after attending the conference on SWM in Australia recently along with several provincial governors in the country.
There are now three established MRFs in Boracay Island. They were established with the help of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Tourism (DOT) and local stakeholders.
The local government unit of Malay, where Boracay Island is situated, has announced that it is targeting to implement a zero waste policy in 2010, drawing an inspiration from the success of the MRF project.
The province of Aklan, particularly Kalibo municipality, is now looking for a permanent sanitary landfill in order to accommodate its increasing volume of garbage.
Marquez said he will coordinate with the DOST to help Aklan acquire facilities for the recycling of garbage to minimize the problem on wastes in the province’s 17 municipalities. (PNA)
