Durano turns over today land-use plan on Boracay dev’t

Regions - Aklan

BORACAY — Tourism Secretary Ace Durano is scheduled today to turn over the Boracay Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) to the municipal government of Malay at Patio Pacific Resort here.

Tourism Regional Director Edwin Trompeta said that stakeholders on the island and Aklan Gov. Carlito Marquez were invited to endorse the Boracay CLUP, a multi-sectoral output designed to address uncontrolled construction and uneven development and land ownership on the island.

"The CLUP, like our Constitution, is the framework of development of Boracay now and in the future. It (CLUP) will also spell the sustainability of tourism without which Boracay will decay, as it is slowly being ruined now as a destination, investment lost and jobs gone," Trompeta said.

Last March, the Department of Tourism (DoT) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted a workshop with resort owners and residents in attendance to draw plans and recommendations for the preservation of environment and sustain the island’s tourism industry.

The workshop centered on how to maintain Boracay’s status as a premier tourist destination and to draft the framework for the sustainable and practical vision of the island.

The CLUP was also developed to resolve issues on poor sewerage and garbage collection problem and other social issues and to identify areas in Boracay for development and specific use.
